According to the newspaper articles found at the link below, Both Daniel and his brother Patrick were part of the first draft of 117th Battalion soldiers to be transferred to 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles. Another article indicates that Daniel was wouned on 24 May being shot in the thigh. He would recover only to be Killed In Action during the battle of Passchendaele.
