Details of Service: Private Hugh Leonard Appelby was the first 117th Battalion soldier to die while overseas. Newspaper reporting indicates that Private Appelby was admitted to the Liverpool General Hospital on 27 August 1916 suffering from appendicitis, just three days after the 117th landed in Liverpool. The same newspaper reporting indicated that Private Appleby succumbed to appendicitis on 10 September 1916.
