Details of Service: LCol Gilbert was the 117th Battalion Commanding Officer. He sailed to England with the 117th. On 06 January 1917, LCol Gilbert was transferred to the 23rd Reserve Battalion at Shoreham, England. On 13 February 1917, LCol Gilbert was deemed surplus to requirements and ordered back to Canada. He sailed for Canada on the SS Grampian on 20 February 1917, arriving 28 February. LCol Gilbert was discharged in Ottawa on 02 April 1917. At the time of attestation, LCol Gilbert was married to Melinda V Gilbert (nee Weyland) and had two daughters - Pearl Louise, aged 14, and Irma Estelle, aged 2.
